The host and founder of
RetireRadio.com is Paul Renfroe, a native Memphian who began his
working life as a missionary. Beginning his twelve-year financial
career in 1994, he was the first in the region to earn the
designation, Certified Senior Advisor. He also
holds professional licenses as an insurance agent, a mortgage
officer and a residential builder.
Mr. Renfroe
highly values his service as the board chairman for the Memphis
Alzheimer's Association and board chairman for the
Bodine School, and as vice chairman for the Tennessee
Alzheimer's Association. Of even greater satisfaction is his
role in starting two churches. Other positions of
church service have included deacon, elder, lay reader and
teacher.
What people
recognize as wisdom in Paul Renfroe, he credits to learning
from everyone and everything. "God has given me
relationships, jobs and health disasters that have taught me. I am thankful to
Him--even for the pains I have undergone."
When asked how he developed his retirement recommendations, Mr.
Renfroe quickly credits his elders. "All I have done was refuse
to re-invent the wheel. After all, who should we ask advice
from if we want to retire successfully? people who are already
retired! So, let us copy what they are glad they did, and
avoid what they wish they had not done. This is very simple--plain
common sense. After years of this, I am a walking
database of strategies and pitfalls I have seen in my elders.
"Against
this common sense approach, billions of dollars in financial
advertising are hard to resist. Advisors trained by the
financial institutions and by the IRS promote strategies that benefit
the financial industry and the government first and you second (at
best). I do not like that. Service to your interests must be
upper-most."
It is not surprising therefore that a passage in the Bible forms the
basis of Mr. Renfroe's work conduct: Philippians 2:3-4. "When we
are told there to do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but
in humility to consider others better than ourselves, then in my
business that means I come as your servant, not your guru. (See
Testimonials!)
"And I have reaped what I sowed--when my client succeeds, then I succeed. As they have succeeded, so have I."
Mr. Renfroe graduated from The McCallie School cum laude in 1974 and with a B.A. in Religion from Rhodes College (then Southwestern at Memphis) with distinction in 1978 followed by postgraduate work in economics and logic at University of Kentucky. He and his wife Diane have been married 29 wonderful years and have two young children.
